What is amazing, is that of all the services, the Corps probably does less as far as having military jobs that translate to the private sector. Every Marine is
a rifleman, even the band carries stretchers and does retrieval of the dead or wounded. The other services offer specialized fields, where you may never fire a
shot, and where you get excellent training for jobs, outside of the military.

Nice headline from USA Today. "Oh noes, the military is broke and overstretched and and and...."
Them of course, you get down to the meat of the article: The Pentagon records do not list what - or how serious - the health issues are, nor whether they were corrected before deployment, said Michael Kilpatrick, a deputy director for the Pentagon's Force Health Protection and Readiness Programs. A Pentagon staffer examined 10,000 individual health records last year to determine causes for the non-deployable ratings, Kilpatrick said. Some reasons included a need for eyeglasses, dental work or allergy medicine and a small number of mental health cases, he said. This is the first war in which this health screening process has been used, the Pentagon said. Most of the non-deployable servicemembers are in the Army, which is doing most of the fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. Between 5% and 7% of all active-duty, National Guard and Reserve soldiers slated for combat were found medically unfit due to health problems each year since 2003, according to statistics provided to USA TODAY. So, first war in which the the process has been used = no baseline for comparison. Problems range from allergies to mental (probably depression which can be corrected with medication). No mention of how many problems were corrected before actual deployment. The Navy had a fit over my brother having ADHD, for example. Techincally, he would be undeployable (heck, he wouldn't have been allowed in the Navy). Never in history has their been a case of a chief who packed on a few pounds being deployed with his ship or perhaps a sergeant who hit the McD's one too many times being sent anywhere. Short version: USA Today's article is so much bullsh#t. The headline will get repeated until it is accepted as "truth" when the reality is a lot different. But that's the way some people want it, isn't it? Makes the rest of their lying BS more believeable in the echo chamber. PT |

Check your local law enforcement, TPT. I'll wager a large percentage are former military.
After all, when your main (and perhaps only) skill is to kill people, what other employment opportunity is out there other than some form of civilian police work. When combined with the military's supreme failure to deprogram most of these people upon their return home, is it any wonder why I don't sleep well at night? And traveling through Glencoe at 3:00am? Sheeeeeeeyit, wha'choo talkin' 'bout, Willis?

Well, 'Patch, if you compare the crime rate of military personnel - especially the murder rate which is somewhere around 1/5 that of the general population
- then a slightly different picture emerges, doesn't it? Perhaps, solely based on those numbers of course, we ought to run everyone through a stint of
active duty. And, believe it or not, even trigger pullers learn other skills that are valuable in the job market.
But hey, "baby killers" worked so well in the 60's there is no reason not recycle it. You going to Recreate '68? PT |

You are correct as far as law enforcement goes. However, most of the problems with law enforcement come from officers who weren't military, but were
wannabes. These guys are the most gung ho of all. Most of the ex-military cops I know are more likely to be more self confident, and less likely to use
unnecesary force. BTW, what are you going through Glencoe at 3:00 am for? You are about 12 miles from my house if you are on 431S, and I am usually up, we
need to exchange numbers and meet if you are out this way much. Quick meal, my treat.

Oh yeah, I forgot that's all soldiers do. Sorry to wreck your thinking here but my father fought in Korea, a time before satellite imaging, unmanned drones, and fighter jets with laser guided missiles to clear a path for the troops. And when he returned, he finished college, became a successful business owner and was a pillar of the community. A lot of men have become great because of things they learned in the military. |

We aren't going down the my-father/uncle/aunt/sister/mother-fought-for path, are we? I gotta tell ya up front, I have some strength in that regard. (And no, 11, there is no such word as "irregardless"). And I will agree, McTig, an exceptional number of great men and women have come out of our military; always have, and always will. Hell, there are thousands who are coming up now. But there are an unprecedented number of folks who have given their all for me and my country that have not been sufficiently cared for; in my opinion. We have a huge number of veterans who are certifiably mentally unbalanced given jobs I don't think they should have.
