Before anyone watches another political debate - this is a must-see! The video is a workshop that explains how the "spin" is put on political news, and how it can sway the view of America and the election. Frank Luntz (the "focus group" guy) is one of the moderators, and he explains how he put words in his focus groups mouth, so to speak, to put a particular spin on their views - even though he can't resist putting a "spin" on his part. Example - the South Carolina debates, where the focus group said that Fred Thompson won, although it was apparent that he did not - Fox was just trying to keep him in the race. Remember - when you hear a candidate make a statement or being asked a question - it is all in the "frame" of the words that strongly influence us.
At about 11:30 in the video is a famous FDR speech - and it seems absolutely Orwellian.

This panel, "Deceiving Images: The Science of Manipulation"features three experts in the field of communication - George Lakoff, Frank Luntz and Drew Westen - who are joined by moderator Nicholas Lemann, and asks whether the age of propaganda is over or if politicans and pundits are just refining the techniques of manipulation. These panelists from both the left and right reveal their secrets about how politicians manipulate the public.
