Spread Question ? |
Lead | |
|
I coached some high school football back in the 80s and early 90s. Ran some shotgun formation in addition to others. What is the advantage gained or reason for
placing your offensive linemen in a "two point" stance as Auburn does in their spread offense?

Looks like we coached at about the same time, and I never coached a spread either. I've been told that there are 2 reasons our O-Line keeps that stance.
First, it gives them an extra step in pass protection, and Second, it makes it more difficult for D-Linemen to read the O-Line's hands on running plays. I
don't know how true that is, but a friend who coaches a high school spread team told me that. I had a similar question because I had always been taught,
low man wins, and that stance would be a huge disadvantage on running plays.

I can definitely see the advantage on pass blocking but maybe it is not the disadvantage that we think it is for the run game if the O-line is zone or gap
blocking. I was studying the blocking scheme of an off tackle play out of the spread by a high school team and noticed that the O-line all basically zone or
gap blocked to their right when the play was going off tackle to the left. The only lineman that didn't block right was the right tackle who pulled to the
left and kicked out on the defensive end. We never zone blocked when I coached, so I guess I'll have to tape some games and run them back and forth in slow
mo to see what they are doing.

Call me crazy but I see some audible formations that the lineman end up putting their hands down... | ||

and knocking the DL off the ball. That said the 2 point stance is worth it if that means we will not see 8-9 men in the box.

I'm out of my element with the line, I coached DB's & RB's mostly. I did notice we pulled the center quite a lot last year, I wonder if that
will continue. There is much about the blocking I don't know, that's why I bug my friends who still coach.
