This is a sad story...I hate it for the kid. But maybe Auburn was little harsh, but they're right. The student must request the services and the help.
The ADA guidelines are in place at every school, but the student must ask for help. The problem is in high school, they probably always held his hand and he
thought they would just come to him and offer help. Obviously, David Irons got the help he needed. I hate how the media will continue to spin this to make
Auburn look bad, especially when we play Ole Miss...they will talk about that non-stop, especially if he is as good as they predict.

Losing Trahan | ||
|
It is a shame & they should not have handled it the way they did with the family, but it was Trahan's (& his familiy's) responsibility to make
it clear how different his condition is. The AU support for student athletes is likely geared to focus on the most common problems. Trahan's particular
learning disability required a unique kind of help. It doesn't mean AU didn't want to help, just that their general system wasn't a fit for Trahan.
Trahan should have sat down with Tubs or Willis earlier & talked about it & explained how the current system wasn't working. I really doubt the AU
Coaches, in that situation, would have let things go on. It should also be noted that at this time, certain courses that would have suited Trahan, like
directed reading, were being discouraged. I understand some changes were made to the support center after the Gundlach affair that made this a perfect storm.
If Trahan had been given some directed reading courses & unique first hand attention with help in EDITING (not WRITING) his papers, he may have done better
& would have continued to learn how to take tests & articulate ideas effectively.
However, I am ticked that they responded the way they did at that meeting. That's ridiculous & hopefully a lesson learned. If they had proof he wasn't going to class or the resource center, they show that first, then work from there. But calling out a kid like that isn't helpful. All in all, a sad story. Trahan obviously liked it at AU. I do hope he makes (Patrick) Willis look bad at Ole Miss (& goes to the NFL early ). He's got the talent.
Good luck Patrick, sorry it didn't work out at AU.

espn is full of crap | ||

Has espn ever painted AU in the good light? shoot no. They can't because their espn and their job is to always make us out to be the worst team in college
football and slam us every chance they get.

Patrick Trahan | ||

Ok. Trahan screws up but yet it's all AU's falt. He did lie to AU and he wasn't doing his work to make the grade. But like we all know, Auburn is
the only one to blame. Well Patrick, I wonder what other school you'll go to now and blame them for yous next screw ups.

simmer down ToW | ||

Calm down ToW...Re-read the article. He never bad-mouthed Auburn, remember, he wanted to stay at Auburn. To me at least, it looks like his brother and mother
pushed him more to not come back to AUburn. His mother was the one who spoke so badly about Auburn.
I think the problem is, the kid was probably embarassed and shy. He may have wanted to try to do things on his own or too shy and embarassed to ask for help. I think the mother could have called one of the coaches, when she saw the low grades, and told them about her son's weaknesses in school. They could have kept that private and then coaches would have known what needed to be done. But it's over now... |

I wish all success academically, on the field (except against Auburn), and in life.

You would think that Trahan or his family would have mentioned this problem when he first arrived. I can understand how he would be embarrassed but you are
responsible for yourself. I wish him well but I think the real problem in his future will be his Mom. ( The quote about there not your family only me and your
brother) That doesn't sound very good.

Unfortunately, he and his family learned a valuable lesson the hard way. They were used to the schools compensating (gearing his work toward an individual education plan). Apparantly colleges do not make the transition from LD high school programs very well. It does seem as though someone in the academic end of the athletic dept. would have been alerted to his high school IEP. Does anyone know how the transition works? An AL recruit (Kerry Murphy) from Hoover last year is also LD. Didn't he sit out due to academics? |
