Grad........I don't know what level of learning disability your daughter has, and even though my wife is a 3rd grade teacher, I don't know all the
language, but I will share something with you. All the way through the 3rd grade I was a "trailer kid." I didn't live in a trailer, that was
where the LD kids would be shipped out to every day after roll was taken for special attention and counselling. I barely made it through junior high and
manipulated and cheated my way through high school. During the high school East West all star my high school coach told two scouts that I was "trade
school" material. He even went so far as to advise my parents to send me to a Vo-Tec school. To make a long story short, I now have 4 degrees and summer
of '09 I should have my p.h.d. My learning disabilities still plague me today even, but I've learned to cope, along with taking meds. Don't let her
give up on herself and by all means have her IQ tested. I made a 13 on the ACT, then 1 year later scored a 149 on a something and something IQ test, and 151 on
another. Had they known I had the capacity to learn, while LD, they could have helped me earlier.

My wife teaches kindergarten and in her case she says some of the worst behavior is from the smarter children(not always but it does happen). The hidden factor
in these examples is the child waking up and wanting to do better. I think I would be way more inclined to help a child who wanted to do better and was doing
all they were capable of rather than one who could do much better and was just creating problems for everyone else. As Gchabo alluded to it is not a simple
problem and there are no easy answers. Ithink it was Einstein that failed the second grade and one of the best teachers I have had always said the toughest
three years of his life was second grade. it just takes longer for thelight to go on for some children than others.

.. and I will never let her give up, no matter the negativity she receives from others...
She had her IQ tested several years ago and it was in the 75-80 range (from what I remember). One of her main issues is short term memory, the normal process the rest of us utilize (reading and learning) does not work with her. Listening and learning works better. She is not dyslexic she just has a lot of trouble reading and comprehending.... She has developed some great coping skills, she is more organized than any young adult has the right to be, but that is what she has to do to remember stuff.... Anyway, Thanks again....

Grad I saw something on the science channel about this girl/woman whose IQ was 50 and she was musically gifted and had perfect pitch. She could not do simple
math but could sing opera. Her parents were mentally gifted and both had advanced degrees and I learned a lot about being a father by watching this PH D father
go over something simple( like making change for a dollar if you bought a candy bar) repetitively with his adult daughter with patience and understanding. But
they also had their moments of great pride like when she sang at the MEtropolitan Opera. It would not surprise me if you had a special attachment with your
daughter simply because of the struggle you have been through together and the joys her achievements that others consider routine bring. I would also bet that
your daughter is talented in some way that she has not had the chance to express yet just as this woman was a musical prodigy but no one would have thought she
had that ability.

She and I do have something special, and I understand completely what the PH D father goes thru.
Just try explaining reconcile-ing your checkbook to a 4 yr old. How you have checks still out there and
If I could just get my wife to balance HER checkbook............

I'm a firm believer that every human being born has SOME form of a talent. Even though the girl that vet mentioned had a 50 IQ, she obviously had the gift
of music. That's what makes genetics so fascinating to me. How someone can LEGALLY be mentally handicapped, yet create such works of genius.
The REAL problem is finding our true talent, is it not?

Great job Grad!!! | ||

I would bet that your daughter will be happy, regardless of what she does. Having supportive parents goes a long way toward well adjusted children. My youngest
is a dwarf and while there are no motor delays, she has some physical and speech problems. I am sure that we both love our children and push them to be the
best they can be. The reward is the smile on their face when they meet a goal, or adapt to a problem on their own.

The NCLB act does have some good ideas, and I do not think all LD children should be seperated from the normal classroom, evidence of this is just like AUpaster's story. I have a cousin whom was placed in special ed, but to meet him on the street you wouldn't think he had a LD. However, I will say from my wife's experience as a teacher that it has many flaws. One of which is when they place a student with major disabilities, that disrupts the classroom with outburst. The said part is I know the childs (Pathetic) mother, whom was on drugs while pregnant and the child paid for it. To make matters worse, she ran off and left the child with her parents ughhhh. Parents like Grad I applaud you. I only wish more Americans were like you. Gshabo, I can tell you take teaching very serious and I too applaud you. From what I have seen most K-8 teachers teach from the heart, likewise from my
experence 75% of 9-12 teachers teach for a check and/or to coach. Not that I bash coaches but a lot of them are less than average teachers in my experence. I
agree with you that some evaulation is needed to determine each childs ability versus mandatory placement, however there are some teachers that given the
chance would pass on placing the LD children in their classroom if given the chance, so I would say the method of selecton would be very difficult to perform
successfully every time, although the teachers would be in the better position to access them. My biggest problem with NCLB is that it focuses on testing
instead of education, and I can also testify that tests do not always represent intelligence. My roommate at AU had difficult with tests, studied 3 times as
much as myself and took him twice as long to pass, and when talking about the material he knew it, but during the test he would choke. I also had a friend that
would ace nearly everything but if I was in the position to hire one of the two, I would chose my old roommate because he had common sense where the other
friend was almost...well....you know...... That is why I think GPA is a tool to consider, but does not always represent the persons ability, just like test
scores.
I too believe each person has gifts, I have an uncle (by marriage) whom is very musical. In fact his entire family is, but his top mechanical skills is
putting on his clothing in the morning (no pun intended). For sake of argument, this is another flaw of the illegal immigration debate, because if not for his
janitor job, his family would starve. I personally love music, in particular the guitar. I have been (trying to) play for more years than I want to admit. I
can play ok and most think I am really good but I learned by constantly repeating and determination to learn a song or riff. I can relate to people having
troubles in an particular subject because my musical talent is near zero, and no matter how hard I tried or the hours I have practiced, I only progress through
learned movements. The irony of this statement is I have always been good in math, and I am wondering if there could be a link in musical talent versus little
mathematical ability or reverse.
