Baseball question for those in the know! |

I need some advice from some of you with kids that play baseball!
My son plays baseball in an 8 year old league here in Birmingham (Oak
Mountain). I thought I had bought him a pretty good bat - a Worth Prodigy. Oak Mountain is trying to get affiliated with the Little League or Dixie Youth
league, which has restrictions on bat barrel size. To be safe, I bought a bat with a 2 and 1/4 inch barrel, which is the largest legal size for Little
League.
I noticed yesterday at practice that we were the only ones on the team
without a "big barrel" bat, which is maxed out at 2 and 3/4 inches - apparently the Little League affiliation rules won't start until next
year.
Do any of you who are "baseball wise" think that the barrel size
makes a big difference? If so, is it worth paying a couple of hundred dollars for a big barrel youth baseball bat for an 8 year old? Any recommendations if
so? I've looked on Ebay, and those suckers are expensive!

If the rules would allow the size bat he is using, I don't see any harm in it. If anything, it would give him better skills and maybe help him develop into
a better hitter. If he can hit the ball well using the smaller bat, he will surely be able to hit it that much better next year when he uses the bigger bat. So
to answer your question, while the bigger bat may help him, I think continuing to use the smaller bat would make him a better hitter.
For now, I would just use the smaller bat assuming the league allows it. And then next year, move up to the bigger barrel. How long has your son been playing? I played from the age of 4 until about 12, at which point I broke something in my knee during practice. I skipped the next season, but played one last year the following season and decided to give it up because I just wasn't the same player as before. |

smalller bat will make him a better hitter in the long run unless you are just dying to spend a couple hundred more on another bat. Don't just do it
because he is the only one without the bigger bat.

at 8 there are more important lessons to be learned than I must always have the best equipment possible. I agree that the smaller bat will make him a better
hitter in the long run. I have not played baseball in ages but remember that one kid always had the most popular bat and the whole team ended up using that one
anyway so if the other kids have one then your son will probably end up borrowing it to bat with anyway. I only quit playing competitive softball a few years
ago and have $1K worth of stuff just sitting around now. They come out with new bats every year so it is hard to sell them after they get a a couple of years
old. Keep the smaller bat and wait until he is a teenager at least to spend the big money on a bat.

Don't buy a new bat. I live in Hokes Bluff(they think they invented baseball here), they have a great youth program here and are 5 time defending state
champs in High School. The coaches at the school come down and hold clinics, and here's what I was told. Make sure your son's bat fits him, it
doesn't matter what other kids swing, as long as your son is comfortable and his bat isn't too heavy, or too long. I'll show you how stupid I was,
I got a great deal on a bat(7 years ago), it was a TPS 30-18. WAAAAY to big for my kid, but he tried to swing it anyway, and consequently struck out a lot.
When the coaches from school saw what he was using they laughed at me, and gave my son a much smaller, and older bat. He hit great with it, and I learned a
lesson. Save your money, learn the right techniques first, then worry about expensive bats. The kids with the right techniques, always become the better
players. Another secret about bats is, they lose effectiveness as they are used. Our high school coaches, as well as several college coaches told me, only use
your good bat in games, not for BP, because they are only good for 2 years at the most. FWIW that's the lessons I've learned, after wasting money. Good
Luck, and above all, Have Fun! |
