Defensive Coordinator Paul Rhoads |
Lead | |
|
I have had this thought for quite sometime and finally decided to post about it and see what others thought. Is it just me or does anyone else feel like he has
a simply maintain attitude for the defense? I haven't heard of one thing he plans on changing or improving. Out of everything I have read on practice and
scrimmage reports he just seems contempt with what CWM had in place. Granted I know CWM did an amazing job and that our defense is very talented and one of the
best in the nation. But I would like to hear more on what his plans are to improve on what we have in place. What new schemes we will be implementing? Less we
forget our defense was specticular but not perfect and I don't by any means expect that but I think there is always room for improvement. Just interested
to see what other Auburn fans had to say on the topic.

Seems to me that he is working more on fundamentals and teaching, than scheme. That is the mark of a good coach. I think he has the idea that what we've
been doing has worked, so let's make sure we just do it better. I am Rhoads biggest critic on this board, but I will certainly give him a chance. I hope he
doesn't ever make wholesale changes, that would be a mistake. It's a lot easier for a coach to learn our schemes and terminology, than for our players
to learn his. Add to that the fact that there is more common ground defensively, than offensively, with most coaches.

aubrave,
I've read a couple of things that hint to the fact that Rhoads will use zone coverage in the secondary most of the time, which is a huge change from Muschamp's man-to-man style. Not being a college-level coach, I wouldn't it's so much of an improvement as a difference in philosophy. I'm sure it will lend itself to a bend-but-don't-break philosophy sometimes, but hopefully it will position the secondary to nab a few more interceptions over the course of the season.

I would like to see zone coverage from our defense.

As long as we look for the ball more I will be happy.. |

There will be plenty of scheming time as we get closer to fall. Right now is the time to emphasize fundamentals and techniques.
And, yes, we will play more zone. |

I'm as skeptical as the next guy, even more. For some reason, though, the fact that he is stressing fundamentals makes me feel good. We have been guilty
of some bad tackling the last several years. If I never see a defensive back dive at the feet of an RB again, it'll be too soon.

I love the idea that he's actually teaching small aspects of the D and not just the schemes. As it's already been said, one of our biggest problems
last year was tackling. I think the other big thing I would like to see improved on is not biting so easily or so often on play action, or getting fooled by a
running play, and also better coverage by the DB's and teaching them to better know when to turn around when guarding WR's. I think the LSU game could
have been ours (not mentioning the intentional short kick offs) had he just been taught when to look back, and swatted the ball down.

I agree with everyones statement, but if Lee had looked at the ball it still doesn't mean he would have seen it. It could have been in the lights, or by
that time harder to pick out in the air. That one play isn't the reason we lost the game anyway. Our offense was garbage in the 3rd quarter and the short
kickoffs didn't help either.

I thought it was powers not lee in the lsu game on that last play.
Personally I'm not too excited about the switch of philosophy back to playing more zone. If memory serves it seems like muschamp played more zone in the 06 season(out of personnel necessity) & then moved to more man coverage in 07, which resulted in a better & more aggressive defense. Zone will work well if you have a great front 7 that can exhibit alot of pressure. imho I'd like to see the defense capable proficient at both man & zone, but it seems usually one is better at the expense of the other. And usually zone is adapted when a team doesn't have the athletes to play man coverage, which imho is not the case for AU. I applaud focus on the fundamentals. |
