Coach Tubberville:
Please accept this letter from a long time member of the Auburn family. In all, our family has 27 graduates from Auburn University; brothers, cousins, my wife, my children and myself. Through all of these years we have been Auburn Football Fans. This legacy and love of Auburn are my credentials for writing this letter.
During these years we have seen winning teams, losing teams, surprise teams, maybe even a few bipolar teams. We have seen excellent coaching, mediocre coaching, bad coaching, and yes, even some bipolar coaching. Some of the Head Coaches have been stellar on the field and inept off and some have been just the opposite.
I have to interject here that I have found you to have been a moderately successful coach on the field, but the strength of my support for you has been your ability to maintain a football program at Auburn that is clean and respectful. You have a talent for speaking with the media, the fans and, I suspect, to the team. Auburn is turning out graduate athletes that are successful in business, in pro sports and in life. It is a rare event when an Auburn Football athlete is in trouble with society while at Auburn and just as rare after they leave. In short, your tenure at Auburn has brought dignity and respect to the Auburn Family. For all that you have our sincere gratitude, our respect and our honor.
There is a silent majority of the Auburn Family that has no influence with the Board of Trustees; we attend Auburn events, including football games; we cheer the teams through wins and loses, we do not boo and we do not whine about how it used to be or how it is at other schools; and you would be surprised to hear that we don't expect to win every single game. And yet we continue because we love it and we want it to be fun. A part of sports fun is the experience of competition and a job well done, whether in victory or loss.
Well, I have to say this in the same frank tone that you have used many times. It ain't fun anymore.
The debacle experienced last night was the culmination of several seasons of what can only be coaching apathy. Forget the arguments about player personnel, assistant coaching changes, schedule or anything else that can be an issue for any one season. What we have now is a trend and whatever the cause; whether you continue to have personal health issues, or the Board of Trustees continue to be a nuisance, or you're afraid to make mistakes or maybe you just have more money than God and don't want to put out the effort anymore… there has been a train wreck.
For the love of all things Auburn, and for the legacy that you have while here; if you can't lead the Auburn Football program with decisiveness and straighten out the turmoil, no matter the consequences to your career, then let it go. Let it go before you lose all the respect and gratitude gained during your time at Auburn.
Respectfully….
An Auburn Fan
