So Biz Jr. just 'invested' (his word) in this with a sizable chunk of his bonus. Then Dad and Son had a serious talk about financial priorities.
Then I shot a few rounds. I think Biz Jr. knows how to pick out nice toys.

I bought a Bushmaster .223 a couple of months ago, and those are a lot of fun too. I think my next toy will be an H&K 416. Your son did well buying the
.308 now, as prices are just going to keep rising. Weapons like that are an investment, they more than hold their value, and in most cases appreciate.

I bought a 223 2 years ago and that is the sweetest shooting rifle I have ever shot. It is extremely accurate and the recoil is slight it is not hard to stay
on target for your next shot. I know it is not suitable for anything really big but around here you are not shooting at distances greater than 150 yards anyway
and it has plenty of takedown for deer and coyotes at that range if you are any kind of shot.

The DPMS web site has some nice trophy pics on it with specs on the guns used to take the trophys. There were some pretty impressive animals taken with a .223
but I would prefer something with more punch just because I don't practice enough and I would not want to wound an animal so that it doesn't die
immediately. 223 is small and light, so you need to be very accurate with it.
There are several great things about this gun but the first one that jumped out at me is how well made and durable this gun is. Everything is high grade moly - stainless steel or very pricey aluminum alloy, except the stock which is a lightweight composite. The stock telescopes and is really easy to adjust. The moving metal parts are teflon coated. It's made so that if you are out the wild for days, you don't have to worry about moisture, cold and dirt causing problems. I have always used a bolt action and I also have a Marlin lever action carbine 44 Mag for tighter, thick woods hunting environments(240 grain bullets don't mind flying through brush). But I can see this DPMS Panther being very practical for a wide range of conditions and game types. They make long barrel versions too for shooting in open spaces. Another thing I liked is that it comes with everything you need when you buy it. It comes with a decent hard travel case, 2 magazines and a custom cleaning kit. |
