My answer is yes and yes as per Biz and Vet's replies. Losses posted for a fiscal year can be written off against gains made in the same year. For
instance I have keeper stocks that made a few bucks in profit (really!). There have been a few that bombed (no, I'm not kidding!). The profits made (from
the good stocks) can then be subtracted by the losses (from bad stocks). There are shades of gray as you might imagine such as previous years when I did this
same thing that have...

You can also sell off stocks that have a current value lower than your purchase price and take a capital loss if you need to reduce your income. There is a
limit as to how much the loss you can claim in the current year. Rules will require that you spread it over several years. Anyway, the result will be a lower
taxable income on your 2008 tax returns.

It is my understanding that there is a direct relationship to the price of oil and the health of the economy. When/if the economy improves, we can expect oil
prices to climb. I remember in September when word of the credit crisis first came out, there was an interview on the news with Donald Trump. He predicted a
dramatic drop in the price of oil. Gas prices are dropping so fast it's almost scary. When we are buying gas at 99 cents a gallon, it's likely all
our investments will...

I agree Vet. It is a good sign but fuel/oil has to remain low for many months before a wide range of economic benefits will be realized. If you have a lot of
cash right now, you probably have more buying power than at any time in the past 30 years and you should be able to gain even more leverage over the next 6
months.
I have to admit that converting most of my investments to cash this time last year may have been kind of a "even blind hog finds an acorn" event

I can chart the patient visits and dollars spent in my clinic and almost show you the day the price of gas dropped down. If gas stays under $3/gallon the
economy will return. It will take it longer to affect things like the housing market which is tied into those bad loans. remember three years ago when the
housing market was booming? it was all that easy money they were loaning out at the time. It may take longer for that to come back and I know building product
prices are still high.
