My oldest son was like that,, we would ground him for one report card to the next.. he didnt seem to care.. We hated doing it but couldnt just let him do as he pleases... He got grounded at moms house and grounded at mine.. He finally got the message and graduated.. I think thats why so many mothers cry at graduation.. relief

The trick is constancy.

I was pretty defiant, even in the environment in which I was raised. I never took a swing at mom, but sometimes I would weigh whether the punishment was worth the crime, so to speak. I think it's the kid...my oldest son is a breeze. He's not perfect but so easy to parent.

Unless there is severe autism, there is no excuse. Some kids have oppositional-defiant disorder, and there is really no treatment available. Sometime tough love is the only answer, if a child says he doesn't care, send him away and let him see for sure. No easy answer, but IMHO the kids that are the product of a strict but fair and loving environment, may hate it while they are there, but are thankful down the road. Ellen I hear your pain but the last butt whipping I toted from my daddy I was 15 years old and had it coming. If the father is not man enough to control the son at that age then you are in trouble. I dont think my Mother could have handled me at that age but she could because she knew Dad had her back. I think the 15 year old butt whipping was as much about him showing that he still could do it. If your 13 year old already has the upper hand you are not going to get it back until he hits...

You make it sound so easy. I have a 13 year old who will tell you to your face he doesn't give a f*ck what you do, he's going to do it anyway because it's "fun". The last time I tried to physically control him he gave me a fat lip. Getting authorities involved? He says send him to juvi...he doesn't care.

I once threatened to call the authorities on my dad, after I broke a few windows with a slingshot. He handed me the phone and dialed the number. He told me he didn't give a sh*t who I called, he'd just beat me worse for saying it. I hung up, took my whipping, and handed over my slingshot.

Only problem with beating him to within an inch of his life is that the next thing you know, Social Services will show up and take the kid, have you arrested and charged with abuse (you whipped the kid) and neglect (how could he have stolen the car if you were watching him afterall).

He may understand what he did was wrong on some level, but not how punishment and consequences are applied. Most children that age only know right or wrong...not varying levels or degrees of wrongness. Say he said a bad word, his parents told him it was wrong and for punishment took his video games away for the weekend. Then he did this and it's wrong...but when I do wrong they take my video games away for a weekend....7 year olds don't understand that this is MORE wrong or dangerous...
